I grew up with the cameras – Tosin Igho
SUNDAY, 08 NOVEMBER 2009 00:00 NIGERIAN COMPASS
Tosin Igho is the son of ace broadcaster cum Director General of Lottery Commission, Peter Igho. As a growing child, Tosin recalls that he practically grew up with the cameras and had found the job
interesting and exciting ever since. Tosin told FUNMI SALOME JOHNSON about his new album and how his pedigree as the son of Peter Igho had impacted positively on his career. Excerpts:
How did you get into showbiz?
I have been doing one or two things in the high school and one thing led to another and after I finished university, I decided to go into music.
What did you study in school?
I did film making.
Why the interest? Is it because your dad is doing something similar?
Not that, I was just interested on my own. I started producing videos and from there I just decided to study film-making and you know, we grew up with cameras and all that because I remember that when I was growing up, I used to roll tapes, switch on the camera and just record myself. So, it is something I grew up with.
How prepared are you for the competition you are going to meet in the music circle?
When I was in the university, I released a song called ‘Naija Boys’ and it actually made a lot of waves and it was just like we want to see how well it will go and it really made a lot of waves. It is not like I am just coming in for the first time.
How well did that sell?
We got a lot of responses and we got quite a number of nomination from the Nigeria Music Award (NMA), Channel O awards and all that. So, I am not particularly new to the circle. But this is my first solo album released in Nigeria.
What was the name of the group you released your first song with?
The name is Pyramid and we were signed on to Sony BNG in South Africa.
How have the exposure you have gathered over the time impacted in the quality of songs you are releasing?
It gets me ready because it has made me be myself. You know when you don’t get surprised by anything, you don’t get star-struck, and you are virtually ready for anything coming. It has actually helped.
Given your experience in South Africa where you schooled, how would you compare the musical industry to what is obtainable here in Nigeria?
The Nigerian music industry is far better than South Africa in terms of making money from your music. They have better structures in South Africa but they favour record labels; it is not that profitable for artistes.
What kind of music are we to expect from your album?
It is basically hip hop, Afro hip hop, Nigerian hip hop. The album has a song for everyone.
How many collabo do you have in it?
I have quite a number of them. I have Terrry G, Face, Mode 9 and DJ Waxy and others.
How many songs are there in the album?
I have seventeen songs in the album.
How does your father feel about all these?
My father also sang in the album. He used to sing too when he was young, so he is happy.
And your mum?
She likes the Yoruba songs in the album; she is happy too.
So where do you see yourself in the next three years?
This is just a first step and because I studied film, I am going to be doing a lot of TV shows and series. This is my first step and next year, I want to get into a television series and I just want to be on air and after that I will probably come back into music again. It is not something I am going to be doing in a haste.
You said you have been directing and producing movies for people. Can you mention names of some of those you have produced for?
I have directed music videos for Don jazzy (Booty Call); Faze (Kpokpodikpo, Luving U Everyday); Terry G (Luv U Sexy) and Sammie Okposo’s (Many Reasons), just to mention a few. I also shot a documentary for a client in Mauritius and I did the shooting of four music videos for Kaka, son of veteran singer, Christie Essien Igbokwe.
Which musical instrument do you play?
I play the keyboard but not heavily but just good enough to know what you are doing.
How do you wish to go about live shows? The vogue these days is for artistes to mime to their CDs on stage. Are you going to follow the same trend.
From my experience, there has been occasions where the sounds system are not properly set up and it messes people up on stage which I think is the reason why some people just opt for playing their CDs on stage. So, apart from it being the artistes’ fault, it is also the fault of those who are organising the shows. They are not making arrangements for live shows. If it is a big show and it is organised, I don’t see why one cannot do a live show . If it is a proper show and you know the sound check is wonderful, I don’t see why one cannot do a live show.
What is your hobby?
My hobbies are sports, making music, playing basket ball and watching television. My biggest sport is making music.
Do you support any football club?
I am not too deep in football but I like Barca
